The process of rechewing the cud to further break down plant matter and stimulate digestion is called rumination.

The partly-digested food that comes back into the ruminant's mouth is the cud. The animal chews the cud with its powerful back teeth to break it down even more. As the cow swallows and saliva washes the cud back into the its system, the food now flows into the omasum (oh mah' sum), the third section of the stomach.

Cud is a portion of food that returns from a ruminant's stomach to the mouth to be chewed for the second time. More accurately, it is a bolus of semi-degraded food regurgitated from the reticulorumen of a ruminant. Cud is produced during the physical digestive process of rumination.
