but first gradually increases and then gradually decreases to zero along the period

The valency of an element while going int the long form form of the periodic table it varies according to its respective groups and period

While going down in the group it remains same as the no. of valence electrons in the last shell  of an element remains the same.

While going left to right in a period it first gradually increases and then it decreases.
