The odd one among these phagocytic cells is (1)Mastocyte. The rest are unequivocally phagocytic cells.

  • Mastocytes are the cells of the connective tissues. They are also known as the mast cells. They secrete histamine, heparin and serotonin. They also secrete the matrix and the fibres that make the composition of the connective tissues.
  • Histiocytes are the cells that are found in the bone marrow, blood, liver, spleen, lungs. They help in maintaining our immunity by performing phagocytosis.
  • Chondroclasts are the cells of the cartilages that perform the function of reabsorption i.e. breakdown of cartilage. Composition of cartilage also includes collagen fibres, chondrin(an avascular matrix) and the cells. The cells include chondrocytes, chondroblasts and chondroclasts.
  • Macrophages are the type of white blood cells that are present near an infected area and kill the foreign micro-organisms, thus protecting us from infection and engulf the dead cells.
