“Choose-Your-Paradigm” Reflection Paper.
The reflection essay should be three pages long. Please be certain it is double spaced (not triple
spaced) and that the margins are not wider than 1 ½ inches. Excessive margins or spacing will result
in reduced points. Each paper is worth 15 points maximum.
I would like you to think about the topics in the books that we have discussed in class for this paper.
Then, I would like you to choose one topic and find a personal experience, a situation you have
observed in another person’s life, or a news story from radio, television, or newspaper that illustrates
that topic. 1) First define and describe the topic that you are choosing to write about. 2) Then link it
to social-conflict, structural-functionalist, or interactionist theory. Define the theory and be sure
you clearly describe the connection between the theory and your topic. 3) Then describe and analyze
your experience with the topic. Vivid, detailed descriptions should comprise the body of the paper—
making sure that they are consistent with the theory you have chosen. You will be evaluated on the
basis of how well you connect the topic with your chosen theory and your examples of
observations.
Paper Format:
1. In your introductory paragraph, state the topic and the theory you are using. Define the theory and
link it to the topic.
2. The body of the paper should consist of several paragraphs, each one illustrating an example of
your experience with/observations about your topic—making sure that the examples reflect your
chosen theory. Tie each example back to the theory.
3. The summary paragraph should be a reiteration of your topic and theory and how they fit together.
You can write about any topic discussed in class, as long as you link it to a theoretical
perspective. For example, you may want to compare Pacifica Radio News with commercial
broadcast news. Pacifica can be heard on KFAI Radio 90.3 FM in Minneapolis, 106.1 in St. Paul.
Democracynow.org is an extension of Pacifica. If you compare the way stories are described, how
might you characterize mainstream journalism as ideological? Or you can compare a Wall Street
Journal news story on a particular topic with the coverage of Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist, Glenn
Greenwald at The Intercept online. (Of course, you will have to link this discussion to the
appropriate theory.)
If you have an idea for a paper, and you would like feedback from me prior to writing it, or after you
have completed an outline or draft, feel free to see me during my office hours, phone me, or email
me. You will be evaluated on the basis of how well you connect your chosen sociological topic with
“real life” observation and an appropriate theory. You can write about any of the topics discussed
in class for this paper.
A paper = Sociological topic clearly defined with several examples illustrating topic articulately.
Theoretical connection clear and theory defined. Maximum of one grammar and one spelling error.
