why did the brothers work hard to save money though they never spent much on themselves

The narrator was impressed by two boys because they were highly committed, dedicated,sincere and very hard working.They were always ready to do even odd jobs.

Actually they were very concerned.They are earning money for the treatment of their sister who was suffering from tuberculosis.So,they didn't spend money on themselves.
