The history of the Church in the East in the eight and First half of the ninth centuries is dominated by the iconoclast controversy, that is, the religious images called “iconoclasts" and those who wanted to destroy the icons.
There seems, however, to be a further difference.
The iconoclast controversy seems to have been fought with far greater intensity in the East than in the west.
This was not, as is sometimes thought because the West had a radically different theology of religious imagery than the East.
Nonetheless, the West seems not to have seen the issue of icons in such stark terms as did in the East.
