Christianity emerged in West Asia, some
2000 years ago. Its founder was Jesus Christ,
who was born in Bethlehem, which was then
part of the Roman Empire. His followers are
called Christians and their holy book is the
Bible. His teachings appealed to the common
people and soon spread through West Asia,
Africa and Europe. He was looked upon as
the Saviour of the World.
In India, Christianity first came to Kerala. It
is believed that the apostle (first Christian
missionary to a region) Saint Thomas came
to Kerala and propagated Christianity. The
Syrian Christians of Kerala are among the
oldest Christian communities in the world.
