Given:

A box of Thornton’s Continental now costs £17.25

The price of a box of Thornton’s chocolates has been increased by 15%

To find:

How much did it cost originally?

Solution:

Let "x" be the original cost of the box of Thornton’s Continental chocolates.

∴ The price of the box of Thornton’s Continental chocolates after an increase of 15% will be,

= x + 15\% \:of\:x

= x + [\frac{15}{100} \times x]

= x + 0.15x

= 1.15x

Also, now the cost of Thornton’s Continental chocolates is given as £ 17.25.

1.15x = 17.25

\implies x = \frac{17.25}{1.15}

\implies \bold{x = 15}

Thus, the original cost of Thornton’s Continental chocolates was £ 15.
