Chromium is manufactured by heating a mixture of chromium(III) oxide with aluminium powder.
Cr2O3(s) + 2Al(s) → 2Cr(s) + Al2O3(s)

Calculate the mass of aluminium needed to react with 50 g of Cr2O3.
Calculate the mass of chromium produced from 50 g of Cr2O3.
Calculate the mass of chromium produced from 5 kg of Cr2O3.
Calculate the mass of chromium produced from5 tonnes of Cr2O3.

Note: 1 tonne = 1,000,000 g
Ar: Cr = 52, O = 16, Al = 27

Answer:

Cr2O3 + 2Al = 2Cr + Al2O3

M(Cr2O3) = 152 kg/kmol

M(Al) = 27

kg/kmol

n(Cr2O3) = 1000 kg / 152 kg/kmol = 6.579 kmol

n(Al) = 2n(Cr) =

6.579*2 = 13.158 kmol

m(Al) = n(Al)*M(Al) = 13.158 kmol * 27 kg/kmol = 355.3

Cr2O3(s) + 2Al(s) → 2Cr(s) + Al2O3(s) a) Calculate the mass of aluminium needed to react with 50 g of Cr2O3. b) Calculate the mass of chromium produced from 50g of Cr203. c) Calculate the mass of chromium produced from 5 kg of Cr2O3. d) Calculate the mass of chromium produced from 5 tonnes of Cr203. (1 tonne is 1 000 000 g) (A,: Cr=52, 0 = 16, Al = 27)
