Cigarette smoke induces free radical formation and contains alkaloids, phenolic compounds, volatile aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, tobacco-specific nitrosamines. These inhibit mucosal cell proliferation (by inhibiting epidermal growth factor), and also induce cell apoptosis
