Indirect speech

Explanation:

  • Indirect speech is a type of narration which is also referred to 'reported speech'. The narration is in the third person which reports what the speaker had spoken and does not quote the speaker's actual words. The tense of the sentence changes according to the reporting verb.
  • 1. Aristotle told his disciples that they were wasting their time and his time then.
  • Since 'said' is the reporting verb the tense in indirect speech has changed to the past tense and the adverb of time 'now' has changed to 'then' and the narration is in the third person.
  • 2. The Chief of Ground Control informed the space travellers that everyone was waiting for their return to earth the following day.
  • 3. The librarian told me that those were the only books that I could borrow at that moment.
  • 4. The old woman told the Police Officer that that bag was not  hers.
  • 5.  Anne told her mother that she wanted to come home that night.
  • 6. Harminder commented that the previous year she was not even four feet tall.
  • 7. Meena told her friends that her project was better than theirs.
