The equations are  4x + 5y = 40 and  2a + 2b ≤ 200

Given problem:

Write real-life situations in your community representing linear equations and inequalities in two variables.

Solution:

Linear equation:

A Linear equation is a mathematical statement with an equal sign (=) between any two algebraic terms or algebraic expressions.

Forming Linear equations

Let's take a situation as follows

Ramu has Rs. 40 he bought some pencils and pens which costs Rs. 4 and Rs. 5 respectively. Represent the situation as a linear equation to find the number of pens and pencils.

Let 'x' be the number of pens and 'y' be the number of pencils

=> 4x + 5y = 40

Inequalities:

In Mathematics Inequality expression is an unequal comparison between any two algebraic terms or algebraic expressions that are represented using signs like greater than, less than, not equal, etc.

A group of four friends visited a restaurant. They didn't want to spend more than 200 so two of them ordered the same dish and another two friends ordered another same dish.

Let a be the cost of one dish and b be the other dish

Total cost of 4 dishes = 2a + 2b

They didn't want to spend more than Rs. 200 which implies 2a + 2b must be less than 200

=> 2a + 2b ≤ 200
