Rural Life refers to the life of the people living as small groups invillages. The rural people dive in their small huts surrounded by trees and vegetables. The breathe pure air. The rural people grow their own vegetables. From early morning to night, nothing sensational happens. The village looks beautiful in the rural setting. There are fruit trees. There are tanks and ponds. There are paddy fields that spread to the horizon. The rural society mainly consists of middle class people, peasants, artisans, potters, blacksmiths, barbers, and washer men. There are priests who worship at the different houses. The relations among them are friendly and personal.
In rural areas, everyone is everyone’s friend and relation. However, in a town each lives for himself and cares little for his neighbor.
Every man is free to live his life in his own way. The cultivators go to till the land or gather harvest. The small artisans do their work nicely. If there is a village school, the young boys and girls do their lessons in the morning and go to their schools.
In the free atmosphere of the village, the children become bold, frank, and healthy. They learn to respect the old men of the village and obey their orders. The older people look upon the younger men as the children of their own house.
There is great scope for outdoor enjoyment in rural India. They play football, cricket, kabaddi, etc. Kite flying is air-exciting passion of the village.
The food they take is fresh and pure. They eat fresh vegetables. They drink the milk of their own cows. Naturally, they grow healthy and strong.
The life of the rural people rests on the lap of Nature. The green grass and trees surround them. Open space is all about them. Paddy fields and vegetable gardens lie about them. Nature in all her charming aspects pleases the eyes and delights the hearts. However, the people in rural India are mostly ignorant and superstitious. They generally follow customs and manners that come down from generation to generation.
Gandhiji said that India lives primarily in villages. But when we talk of India’s progress or achievement, we only think of the standard of living in cities. Consequently the cities are flourishing and the villages are going down day by day.
Problems of village life: At present, the condition of the life of the people living in villages is gloomy. The problems of our villagers are many and varied.

The villagers are poor, ignorant and superstitious.

Most of the villages have no basic amenities like good roads, schools and hospitals.

The condition of village schools is not satisfactory. Moreover, the villagers don’t understand the importance of education.

A large number of children are engaged in economic activities, mainly agriculture.

They have limited knowledge on health.

Solutions for upliftment of village life: For their solution some concrete programs should be taken by both the Government and the local bodies.

Mass education should be spread by establishing more primary and secondary schools. It must be made both compulsory and free.

Night schools should be set up for the illiterate adults to teach them to read and write.

Roads and other means of communication in the village should be improved.

Cottage industries should be revived and agriculture should be modernized.

Villages should be electrified to remove the depressing darkness of rural night.

Villagers should be educated regarding elementary hygiene and scientific method of cultivation.

Every Block should have a hospital or a primary health centre to provide medical aids to the villagers.

Rural banking should be set up for financial assistance to the village people.

Conclusion: In recent years the Central and the State Governments have taken some steps to improve the condition of the villagers. The village Panchayat and the Co-operative Credit Societies are two important factors in this respect. All these will strengthen rural economy and make villages not only habitable but also attractive and prosperous.
