In a rapidly digitizing and globalizing world, more and more are settling in urban areas. South Africa’s urban areas over the years have seen an increase in people arriving for work-related purposes but end up settling down. This has increased traffic congestion, pressurised available infrastructure and created a huge backlog in housing provision and by extension, rural-urban migration has also increased crime levels in urban areas. By strictly examining the available and relevant literature on the concept of free-higher education in South Africa, it was evident that rural-urban migration has been devastating for rural areas, the loss of skill, income and innovation are some of the repercussions which have been felt by rural areas. The South African government has not adequately addressed this increasing phenomenon, and failure to do so will cripple socio-economic development and growth in rural areas for decades to come. The study found that urban areas are failing to cope with the increasing rate of rural-urban migration and that government has no invested enough towards rural development. Therefore, an increase in rural investments is the only credible solution that would ensure a significant decrease in rural-urban migration
