In 1930, Gandhiji called for civil disobedience movement against the British .

He announced that he would break the salt law himself.

In those days, salt manufacturing was the Monopoly of the government. People had to pay tax whenever they purchased salt . On 12 March 1930, 

Gandhi Ji along with some

of its followers, marched from Sabarmati Ashram

 to the Coastal Town Of Dandi, 

lwhere they broke government laws by gathering

 natural salt found on the seashore andboiling sea water to produce salt . 

Gandhiji's Dandi March marked the beginning of the Civil

 Disobedience Movement.

  • It was started in 1930.
  • Due to great depression of 1929, failure of simon commission, rejection of Gandhi's eleven demands.
  • In cities movement was supported by businessman,in the countryside rich peasant communities actively participated.
  • The movement was withdrawn in 1931.
  • Women were actively participated in movement.
