Civil Rights Activists targeted segregation in interstate transportation because  the interstate travel was subject to federal law.

In 1946, The supreme court of United States banned segregation in interstate transportation. So the activists began to travel freely without any segregation. The white activists and the black activists began to travel in one bus along with other passengers. They faced resistance from the south which resulted in violence. Later the federal law banned the segregation in interstate transportation which emboldened the activists further and they started targeting segregation in interstate transportation.
