● Activating and deactivating groups -
- Electron donating groups when attached to benzene ring increases their activity against electrophilic substitution reactions.
- Thus these are called ring-activating groups. For example, OH, OR, OOR, CH3, etc.
- Electron withdrawing groups when attached to benzene ring decreases their activity against electrophilic substitution reactions.
- Thus these are called ring-deactivating groups. For example, CN, NO2, CF3, NR3, Cl, etc.
