Explain rural unemployment in India.
Explanation:
Rural unemployment is more pronounced in the rural areas of India. In rural areas, seasonal unemployment and disguised unemployment widely exist. A huge number of rural workers or farmers have to remain idle for a period of 4 to 6 months in a year. Agriculture is a seasonal occupation. Hence, our workers and farmers do not find work round the year. In the absence of proper irrigation facilities, multiple cropping is not possible in rural areas. Further, subsidiary employment opportunities are also lacking. This forces rural people to remain out of work during the off season. This is known as seasonal unemployment.
Disguised unemployment is another type of unemployment. It refers to a situation where the number of workers engaged in a job is much more than is actually required to do the job. This problem arises due to excessive pressure of population on Indian agriculture. In India, farming is jointly done by family members. All members of the family share the farm work. Here, an individual member may feel that he is engaged in gainful work though he may be contributing nothing to the total output. Thus, even if he is withdrawn from the work, total farm output would remain unaffected. This feature is known as disguised or hidden unemployment. Unemployment is hidden in the sense that we cannot point to any person and say that he is unemployed. Here the same farm output can be produced with a smaller number of persons.
Disguised unemployment occurs mainly because of three reasons:
- Availability of large labour force
- Non-availability of subsidiary/alternative
- Family farming method
