difference between soap and detergent
a)soap dont react with hard water
detergents easily react with hard water
b)soap are long chain of carboxylic acid of potassium and sodium salt
detergent are long chain of carboxylic acid of ammonium and sulphonate salt

when soap get mixed with water and dirt its hydrophilic(ionic) end dissolves with water and hydrophobic end gather around oily dirt particle forming cluster of micelles
these micelles are washed away by plenty of water

soaps form foam hardly as soaps don't easily react with hard water

Hey mate here you go.....

Difference:

1) Soaps are sodium Or Potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acid.

Detergents are ammonium Or Sulphonate salts of long chain carboxylic acid.

2) soaps do not give lather with hard water, it only gives lather with soft water.

Detergents give lather with hard water as

well as soft water.

3) soaps form scum with hard water.

Detergent do not give scum with hard water.

Cleaning action of soap:

Most Dirt is oily in nature and you know that oil Don not dissolve in water.

The molecules of soap are Sodium Or potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acids. The ionic end of soap dissolve in water while the carbon chain dissolves in oil. The soap molecule, thus form structures called Michelle's. Where one end of the molecules is towards the oil droplet while the ionic end face outside. This forms an emulsion in water. The soap molecule thus help in dissolving the oil in the water and we can wash our cloth clean.

Two problems:

Detergents are not eco friendly they are non biodegradable.

It cannot distinguish between hard water and soft water

Hope it will help you.

Thank you: -)
