Why did we use the minus sign?

The cell of 2 v emf is discharging. It can be seen as current flows from -ve to +ve through the 2v emf cell and it states that the 2v emf cell is discharging. For this reason may be -ve is used(maybe).

There is another way may be by some voltage law but the way used in this question is good .
