A key is an explanatory list of symbols that is used in a table, map, and so on. Legend is more generic, whereas key is more specific. Colour is one of the primary means to encode data graphically.

Explanation:

  • A key/ legend to provides the requisite information to make sense of the map. Maps also use symbols or colors to represent things & the key gives us the explanation of those things imply
  • Map keys are  boxes at the map's corner. For interpreting the map, the details they provide is important. The primary symbols may be pictures or icons representing various things on the map.
