Class 5 Mylestone Chapter-1 Let's Try 5 Solutions

1. Every seed needs favourable conditions to grow into a new plant. These conditions are-
• seeds should be healthy •seeds should not be damaged.
• seed should get the right type of soil and manure.
•seeds should get the right amount of water, air, light and warmth to grow.
If all the above favourable conditions are met, only then the seeds grow into a new plant. As all the seeds do not get all these conditions, so all seeds to not grow into plants, only a few of them grow into plants.
2. Every seed should get enough nutrients, space and warmth to grow into plants. All the seeds cannot get all the conditions at one place. This is why it is very important that all the seeds are distributed over a wide area where they stand a better chance of finding the right conditions to grow.
3. Many plants can reproduce without seeds. The growth of plants from different parts other than seeds is known as vegetative reproduction. Plants like carrot and sweet potato can reproduce by roots and bryophyllum can reproduce by leaves.
4. Seeds are dispersed in nature by a variety of ways. Two ways of seed dispersal are:-
a. Wind dispersal- some seeds are as light as dust and can be easily carried to new places by wind. For example, seeds of cotton and common milkweed have tiny hair on them and dispersed through wind.
b. Water dispersal- the seeds of trees that grow near water bodies float on water and disperse long distances by water. For example coconut and palm.
5. A seed is covered by a seed coat which protects the embryo, the baby plant. Inside the seed coat ,a seed has fleshy seed leaves known as cotyledons. Some seeds have only one fleshy seed leaves and are known as monocotyledons while others have to fleshy seed leaves, known as dicotyledons. these cotyledons store food for the baby plant. The baby plant uses this food till it grows its own roots and leaves.
