My Village - A Historical Document by Balu
My village is Thathamedu. Fifty years ago, there were only mud roads
in my village. The main vehicle found on the mud roads during that time
were bullock carts carrying plantains to the market. Coconut trees, paddy,
plantains, colocasia etc. were the major crops cultivated. There were only
two persons who got college education during that time. Later, they became
the teachers in our village school. They were Sadhashivan sir and Savithri
teacher. Agriculture and coir making were the major occupations. Dhoti
and towel was the usual costume. People used to gather in evening markets
for buying and selling goods. They had to pass a river to reach the town.
They rarely went to town, especially to the hospitals there, to treat severe
illnesses.
