Acid

  1. Acids change the colour of litmus from blue to red.
  2. They convert the colour of Methyl Orange from Orange/Yellow to Pink.
  3. Acids turn the pink colour of Phenolphthalein to colourless.
  4. Acids can conduct electricity.
  5. Some Acids are highly corrosive in nature which means that they corrode or rust metals.

Bases

  1. Bases change the colour of litmus from red to blue.
  2. They are bitter in taste.
  3. Bases lose their basicity when mixed with acids.
  4. Bases react with acids to form salt and water. This process is called Neutralisation Reaction(Read).
  5. They can conduct electricity.

Salts

  1. Crystals or white crystalline powder.
  2. Transparent and colourless in crystalline form – rather like ice.
  3. Crystallises in the isometric system, usually in the form of cubes.
  4. Soluble in water (35.6g/100g at 0°C and 39.2g/100g at 100°).
  5. Slightly soluble in alcohol, but insoluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid.
