Acid
- Acids change the colour of litmus from blue to red.
- They convert the colour of Methyl Orange from Orange/Yellow to Pink.
- Acids turn the pink colour of Phenolphthalein to colourless.
- Acids can conduct electricity.
- Some Acids are highly corrosive in nature which means that they corrode or rust metals.
Bases
- Bases change the colour of litmus from red to blue.
- They are bitter in taste.
- Bases lose their basicity when mixed with acids.
- Bases react with acids to form salt and water. This process is called Neutralisation Reaction(Read).
- They can conduct electricity.
Salts
- Crystals or white crystalline powder.
- Transparent and colourless in crystalline form – rather like ice.
- Crystallises in the isometric system, usually in the form of cubes.
- Soluble in water (35.6g/100g at 0°C and 39.2g/100g at 100°).
- Slightly soluble in alcohol, but insoluble in concentrated hydrochloric acid.
