Britishers made a record of every event.

They documented it and presented it.

These records were the source to learn about the history, policies that were followed during that period.

Similarly, the detailed surveys done by the Britishers to map all of India, the revenue survey was done in the villages to know the topography, type of soil, flora, and fauns, etc.

The objective was simple, this data was used as a source of reference for the historians to understand what kind of conditions existed in the Britsih era.
