Chapter 5 is ‘The Snake and The Mirror’. In this chapter, a doctor is the main character. He is shown to live in a small house which contains many rats. The house does not have electricity connection and so there is no light during the night. The doctor is not married and does not care about his looks.
One day, after his job, he returns back home and removes his coat and sits on a chair before a mirror. He lit a kerosene lamp. He then took a book to read. But eventually he saw his face on the mirror and stared at it. He combed his hair. At that time, he heard the sound of rats from his room. He then went to light a cigarette and came back to his chair. He was thinking about his own marriage.
That was when he heard a loud thud sound. As he looked back, he saw a big snake. Within no time it had climbed up his shoulder. The distance between both their faces was only a bit. The doctor prayed to God to save him. The snake then looked behind and found his face on the mirror. It then unwounded his hands and went closer to the mirror. At that time, the doctor stood up from the chair and ran out of his house.
The next day, he returned to his along with his companions, but they couldn’t find the snake.
