In the short story “Iswaran the storyteller” Mahendra was a junior supervisor in a firm which offered on hire supervisors at various types of construction sites like factories, bridges and dams. His job was to monitor the activities at the construction site.  He had to keep moving from one place to another every  few months as ordered by his head office.

He was a bachelor who had simple needs and, thus, was able to adjust himself to all kinds of odd conditions and situations.

Mahendra was the junior supervisor at the construction site . Iswaran was his assistant and Mahendra in his presence never felt bored and he didn't feel like having a television. Iswaran also told him many stories.Mahendra kept shifting from one city to another and Iswaran never complained about it and followed his orders.
