king aurengzeb banned the playing of the pungi because of its sound. it's tonal quality was improved by a barber. this new instrument was called the shehnai. bismillah khan was from a family of musicians. everyday, he used to see his uncles practicing and day by day became interested in the shehnai. in 1938, with the opening of all India radio came his big break. he became an often heard player on radio. he also impressed the rulers abroad with his music. although he was famous, his film Ventures were limited to two. he wishes that he would teach our children hindustan's richest tradition- music. he sees banaras and dumraon as the most wonderful towns. he regularly used to play the shehnai in the kashi vishwanath temple. he died on 21 august, 2006 after a prolonged illness.
