The Green Revolution resulted in a record grain output of 131 million tonnes in 1978/79. This established India as one of the world's biggest agricultural producers. Yield per unit of farmland improved by more than 30% between1947 (when India gained political independence) and 1979.

The Green Revolution (a term used for rapid increases in wheat and rice yields in developing countries brought about by improved varieties combined with the expanded use of fertilizers and other chemical inputs) has had a dramatic impact on incomes and food supplies in many developing countries. It improved the economic lot of farmers, and their standard of living greatly improved. It reduced the import of food grains. The revolution increased the use of fertilizers. Generally speaking a fertilizer has the chance to soak into the soil and spread to other areas if it rains.

The negative impacts of the Green revolution are as follows:

1. The Green Revolution required a lot of water for irrigation purposes which shows unequal benefits derived by farmers belonging to different regions of our country. 2. The increased use of water resulted in lowering of ground water level in many regions.
