Class Debates: A conjecture to learn or wastage of time?

Sometimes,debates at a serious topic which is in your syllabus is helpful so, it is very important to listen it carefully in the classroom.Otherwise it may be just a wastage of time for students as in the time of debate the students could study further main or important topics which may be covered in their examination.So at the end, I will say that discussions are important to an extent if they are related to studies.
