Answer:

1. The latitude specifies a location's distance north or south of the equator. The longitude specifies the location's distance east or west from an imaginary line connecting the North and South Poles, called the Prime Meridian.

2. The prime meridian separates the eastern hemisphere from the western hemisphere. Halfway around the world, at 180 degrees longitude, is the International Date Line. The prime meridian is the line of 0 longitude, the starting point for measuring distance both east and west around the Earth.

3. The Equator separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Equator is at 0° latitude. The Prime Meridian separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England and is at 0° longitude.

4. The equator is an imaginary line that divides the earth into halves called the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. When we say that the equator is an imaginary line, we mean that there is no physical or real line cutting the earth in half. It is a line drawn on maps to show where the hemispheres are located.

5. Lines of Longitude intersect the equator at right angles but end at the North and the South Poles. The lines that run between the North and the South Poles are called Lines of Longitude, or meridians.

6. Another way to describe location is to use reference lines to describe coordinates, or absolute position, on the globe. Two types of imaginary reference lines are used to locate positions or points and to make accurate globes and maps. These lines are called parallels of latitude and meridians of longitude.

Q1) Compare and contrast the terms of Latitude and Longitude.

Latitude alludes to the horizontal lines that represent the distance of any point, north or south of the equator, its direction is east to west. On the other hand, longitude implies the vertical lines indicating the distance of any point, east or west of the prime meridian, its direction is north to south.

Q2) What is the significance of the Prime Meridian compared to the other lines of Longitude?

You know Prime meridian is a longitude. All longitudes are of same importance but with the help of prime meridian(0°longitude) we can navigate whether we are going east or west. You may say prime meridian is the boundary line of East and West on the earth. It is also helpful in determining time zone .

Q3) Compare and contrast the Prime Meridian to the Equator.

The Equator separates the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. The Equator is at 0° latitude. The Prime Meridian separates the Eastern and Western Hemispheres. The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, England and is at 0° longitude.

Q4) How does the Equator distinguish between the two of the hemispheres?

Geographical Differences

The Northern Hemisphere refers to the half of the planet that is north of the equator, while the Southern Hemisphere is all of the planet south of the equator. Some continents run through both hemispheres, although all of Europe and North America are in the Northern Hemisphere.

Q5) Where are two places that the Longitude lines intersect?

Well, there's two very significant ones: the lines at zero*and 180*. The zero* line is called the Prime Meridian, and it runs real close to Greenwich England. That is where the first time zone is, or Zulu Time. That is how we set our clocks all over the world!

Q6) What do you think is the purpose of the lines that you can find on the map or globe?

Imaginary lines, also called meridians, running vertically around the globe. Unlike latitude lines, longitude lines are not parallel. Meridians meet at the poles and are widest apart at the equator. Zero degrees longitude (0°) is called the prime meridian.
