3. SECTION A (READING) (7 Marks) Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: If you seem to be going nowhere in life you probably make very few conscious decisions. Life just seems to happen to you. The decisions made by your subconscious mind just seem to come out as habits. You will not have any control over the actions you take as a result of habit. It can greatly be demotivating. A motivated person on the other hand recognizes his choices. He reacts to them both consciously and subconsciously. In fact the subconscious mind gives clarity to the decisions made by the conscious mind. Decision making is a process that involves several steps. Follow these steps if you are faced with a major decision in your life: *start with a blank piece of paper. Write down everything you can think of related to your decision. Then write down your options. Put the paper away. Watch a movie; read a book; or go to sleep for the night. *Take a fresh look at the options you have generated. Do a few of them jump out at you as specially good choices? Underline them. Cross out the rest. *List the advantages and disadvantages of your options. Some of them overlap and some will appear unique. *At the end of the process, it may become clear that one of your choices is better than the others. Put the piece of paper away. Don’t look at it for 24 hours. You may want to take it out again the next day or you may wake up having made your decision. *If you have not, bring a trusted friend in.
