Herriot was a veterinary doctor who was worried about Tricky, Mrs Pumphrey's dog. He was a dutiful doctor who cared about others and their emotions more than his personal interests. At first, he talks about the health of Tricky to Mrs Pumphrey, whose pampering had ruined Tricky's health. So he decided to take tricky to his surgery for his proper care. There, he kept Tricky on diet and helped him exercise. Mrs Pumphrey would send two dozens of fresh eggs for Tricky which would be utilised by Herriot. He did so because he was keeping Tricky on diet. Later on, Mrs Pumphrey send him wine and then brandy for Tricky but since it was not good for the dog, Herriot would use it. In the end, when Tricky became healthy, Herriot could have kept Tricky for more time and could have enjoyed eggs, wines and brand.ies for his personal interest, but he knew that Mrs Pumphrey was dying to meet Tricky and that's why he kept his personal interest aside and handed over Tricky to her. This shows that he cared for the emotions of his owners and was dutiful.
