5x + 7y = 236. (ii)

Multiplying eq(i) by 5

5x+5y = 200. (iii)

(ii) - (iii),

2y = 36

y = 18

Therefore, x= 40-18= 22. (using eq (i) )

Thus, 22kg of first kind and 18 kg of second kind of sweets were bought by the students.
