(i) Tropical evergreen Forests:

  • These forests need heavy rainfall and high temperature.

  • Forests have hard wood trees with trunk and branches of dark colour.

  • A special feature of these forests is the scattered distribution of one particular species of trees.

(ii) Mid-latitude Forests:

  • This type of forests are largely found in the moderate climatic region.

  • Trees are generally deciduous and have broad leaves.

  • They shed their leaves in the autumn season.

  • Oak, ash, cedar, fir, birch, etc., are the important species of trees.

(iii) Mediterranean Forests:

  • These forests are found in the mid latitude having winter rainfall and dry summer.

  • Trees are adapted to seasonal changes, never shed their leaves in dry summer.

  • Plants have spiny, waxy or small leaves.

  • Cork, olive and chestnut are the common trees.

(iv) Coniferous Forests:

  • These forests extend around the north polar region and high mountains in Europe, Asia and North America.

  • Trees do not shed their leaves due to limited short summer, hence, look evergreen.

  • These trees have thick needle shaped leaves to reduce transpira tion and protect themselves from cold winter.
