Classification of groups on the basis of the degree of intimacy is one of the characteristics of Primary Group in a society Physical proximity or closeness provides an opportunity for the development of intimate and close relations. The members of a primary group come into direct contact with one another, meet face to face for mutual help, companionship, and discussion of common questions.They live in the presence and thought of one another and in Cooley's phrase, such groups are  'the nursery of human nature'. 

Profession K. Davis remarked that physical proximity or face to face relation is not indispensable for establishing close contact or intimacy. We may have face to face relation with milkman or maid, but there is no intimacy. On the other hand, we can communicate with a friend staying far off which may lead to the development of intimacy though we may not have seen each other for many years. Relationships among primary group members are based on intimacy.
