It was generally accepted, and expressed in schemes of classification, that the Gymnospermae formed a group coordinated with the Angiospermae. From time to time suggestions have been made for splitting the Gymnospermae into a number of major groups taxonomically equivalent one to another and to the angiosperms.
Coulter and Chamberlain (1910) divided the gymnosperms into seven orders. Some of the orders are quite extinct and not found in present day.

Gymnosperms are a diverse group in vascular plants in which the seed are not enclosed by an ovary. There are almost 70 genera and 725 living species of gymnosperms in the wild. Researcher and author K.R. Sporne has classified the gymnosperm into three classes. They are
Cycadopsida
Coniferopsida
Gnetopsida
Cycadopsida class is characterized with plants like Cycas.
Coniferopsida class is characterized evergreen trees in which leaves are in the structure of needle and scale like Pinus.
Gnetopsida class is characterized with shrubs and woody climbers like Gnetum.
