Maps are therefore often classified by the primary purposes they serve. Topographic maps usually form the background for geologic, soil, and similar thematic maps and provide primary elements of the bases upon which many other kinds of maps are compiled.

Classification of Maps

Maps can be of several kinds depending on the features represented on them. Broadly, there are three types of maps:

Physical Maps : Maps which show natural features of the earth such as mountains, plateaus, plains, rivers, oceans etc. are known as physical or relief maps.

Political Maps : Maps which show administrative units in the form of different countries or states with their capitals and locations of important cities and towns are known as political maps.

Thematic Maps : Maps which focus on specific information about roads, building structures, railways, rainfall, crops, distribution of forests, minerals, industries, population density, literacy rate etc. are known as thematic maps.
