In Chemistry, molecules are classified as mono, di, and tri according to the number of atoms present in them.

What are molecules?

  • Molecules are classified as homogeneous and heterogeneous.
  • According to the number of atoms present in them they can be either mono, di, or tri.
  • Let's say, if a molecule has one atom then it is called mono. For example, the molecule of oxygen is made up of two similar atoms.
  • Similarly, the molecule of water contains one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms forming H2O.
  • On the other hand, if there are three different atoms then it is called a tri molecule.
  • For example, ozone contains three oxygen atoms so it is a tri molecule.
