Classification of satellite orbit is as GEO, MEO and LEO :

HEO - Highly Elliptical Orbit

MEO - Medium Earth Orbit.

LEO - Low Earth Orbit.

The differences on the basis of their height and uses is as followed.

Height :

  • HEO is 35,786 km
  • MEO usually occupies the space between 5,000 and 12,000 km.
  • LEO is 2,000 km in altitude.

Uses :

  • HEO is used for communications, satellite radio, and remote sensing.
  • MEO is used for GPS, Glonass and Galileo. It is used to provide coverage at at extreme latitudes in polar areas.
  • LEO is used for communication applications, such as the Iridium phone system.
