Classification of satellite orbit is as GEO, MEO and LEO :
HEO - Highly Elliptical Orbit
MEO - Medium Earth Orbit.
LEO - Low Earth Orbit.
The differences on the basis of their height and uses is as followed.
Height :
- HEO is 35,786 km
- MEO usually occupies the space between 5,000 and 12,000 km.
- LEO is 2,000 km in altitude.
Uses :
- HEO is used for communications, satellite radio, and remote sensing.
- MEO is used for GPS, Glonass and Galileo. It is used to provide coverage at at extreme latitudes in polar areas.
- LEO is used for communication applications, such as the Iridium phone system.
