Amino Acids

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.

These are the compounds in which a basic group (NH2) and an acidic group (COOH) are simultaneously joined to the same carbon atom.

There are 20 amino acids.

Out of these 20, eight are essential for humans as the body cannot produce them by themselves, and they have to be supplied externally.

These are: isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan and valine.

The remaining twelve are non essential amino acids and can be produced by our body.

These are Arginine, histidine, alanine, asparagine, aspartic acid, cysteine, glutamine, glutamic acid, glycine, proline, serine and tyrosine.
