Bacteria can be classified into 4 major categories on the basis of their shape. They are -

• Cocci - They are spherical in shape. When cocci reproduce they create different patterns. There are 4 types of cocci bacteria. They are -Diplococcus bacteria, Streptococcus bacteria, Staphylococcus bacteria and Enterococcus bacteria.

• Spirilla - They are spiral in shape and are also known as Spiral Bacteria. Spiral bacteria falls in the category of prokaryotes . Spiral bacteria can be subclassified by the number of twists per cell, cell thickness, cell flexibility, and motility.

• Bacilli - They are rod - shaped. Bacilli is a taxonomic type of bacteria that includes two orders, Bacillales and Lactobacillales, which contain several well-known pathogens such as Bacillus anthracis which causes anthrax. Bacilli are almost exclusively gram-positive bacteria.

• Vibrios - They are comma - shaped.They are typically found in salt water, Vibrio species are facultative anaerobes that test positive for oxidase and do not form spores.
