Classify minerals into the three groups give an example of each
Answers
minerals are classified as
metallic minerals , eg. iron ore
non-metallic minerals , eg. coal
energy minerals , eg.natural gas
Silicates. Silicate minerals are the most common of Earth's minerals and include quartz, feldspar, mica, amphibole, pyroxene, and olivine. Silica tetrahedra, made up of silicon and oxygen, form chains, sheets, and frameworks, and bond with other cations to form silicate minerals.
Oxides. A basic oxide reacts with water to give a base. Examples include the oxide of most metals, such as Na2O, CaO, BaO. These are basic in nature.
Sulfates. Many examples of ionic sulfates are known, and many of these are highly soluble in water. Exceptions include calcium sulfate, strontium sulfate, lead(II) sulfate, and barium sulfate, which are poorly soluble. Radium sulfate is the most insoluble sulfate known.
Sulfides. Significant examples include: argentite (silver sulfide), cinnabar (mercury), galena (lead sulfide), molybdenite (molybdenum sulfide), pentlandite (nickel sulfide), realgar (arsenic sulfide), and stibnite (antimony), sphalerite (zinc sulfide), and pyrite (iron disulfide), and chalcopyrite (iron-copper sulfide).
Carbonates. For example calcium carbonate CaCO3, calcium-magnesium carbonate CaMg(CO3)2 and iron carbonate FeCO3. These carbonates form an important component of rocks like limestone, dolomite and siderite. Carbonates of sodium and potassium are used for their anti-microbial properties as a cleaning agent and for preserving food.
Native Elements. These native elements are commonly divided into three groups—namely, metals (platinum, iridium, osmium, iron, zinc, tin, gold, silver, copper, mercury, lead, chromium); semimetals (bismuth, antimony, arsenic, tellurium, selenium); and nonmetals (sulfur, carbon).
Halides. A halide ion is a halogen atom bearing a negative charge. The halide anions are fluoride (F−), chloride (Cl−), bromide (Br−), iodide (I−) and astatide (At−). Such ions are present in all ionic halide salts. Halide minerals contain halides.
