Answer:

A mountain is any natural elevation of the earth’s surface. The mountain may have a small summit

and a broad base. On the basis of their origin they are divided into 3 categories – fold mountains,

block mountains and volcanic mountains.

Explanation:

Origin Example

 Flat Mountains are

formed by the

compressive movement

of earth’s lithospheric

plates. Layers of rocks

pushed towards each

other and are uplifted by

folding to form

mountains.

 The upward folds are

called anticlines while the

downwards folds called

synclines.

The Urals and The

Appalachians are

examples of Old fold

mountains.

The Himalayas and

The Alps are

examples of young

fold mountains.

 Block Mountains are

created when large areas

are broken and displaced

vertically.

 The uplifted blocks are

termed as horsts and the

lowered blocks are called

graben.

Rhine valley and the

Vosges Mountain in

Europe are examples

of such mountain

systems.

 Volcanic mountains are

formed due to volcanic

activity.

Mt. Kilimanjaro in

Africa and Mt.

Fujiyama in Japan are

examples of such

mountains.
