Classification of plateaus:
- Plateaus are classified into four major types, namely volcanic plateaus, continental plateaus, intermontane plateaus, and piedmont plateaus.
Volcanic Plateaus:
- As the name suggests, these plateaus are formed by frequent and gradual volcanic eruptions over a region.
- As they are a result of volcanism, they are formed mainly of igneous basaltic rock.
- The main source of lava that results in the formation of such plateaus are large hotspots.
Continental Plateaus:
- The name 'continental plateaus' comes from the orientation of these plateaus.
- These plateaus lie entirely on the continental plates and are either surrounded by plains or by coasts.
- These plateaus usually have steep sides and cover a large area. They are generally featureless.
Intermontane Plateaus:
- These plateaus are called 'intermontane' because they are usually skirted by mountains on all sides.
- They are recognized as the highest of all the other types of plateaus.
- These plateaus are formed as a result of the folding or lifting of continental plates.
Piedmont Plateaus:
- The attribute of this plateaus of having a plain or an ocean on one side and a mountain on the other side is clarified by the term 'piedmont' in its name.
- In French, 'pied' means foot and 'mont' means mountain.
- The plateaus that have a plane or a coast on one side and a mountain on the other side are thus called 'Piedmont' plateaus.
