The given reactions can be classified into oxidation and reduction reactions in the following manner :

1) Cu  → Cu²⁺ - Oxidation reaction

2) Fe³⁺ →   Fe²⁺ - Reduction reaction

3) Cl⁻ →  Cl - Oxidation Reaction

1) Cu - 2e⁻ →  Cu²⁺

• In this reaction, the copper atom loses two electrons and changes into a copper (II) cation.

• Loss of electrons is called oxidation, therefore, the above reaction is an oxidation reaction.

2) Fe³⁺ + 1e⁻ →  Fe²⁺

• In this reaction, the Fe³⁺  ion gains one electron and changes into a Fe²⁺  ion.

• Since gain of an electron is called reduction, the change of Fe³⁺ to Fe²⁺  ion is an example of reduction reaction.

3) Cl⁻ - 1e⁻ →  Cl

• In this reaction, the chloride anion loses one electron and changes into a chlorine atom.

• Since loss of an electron is called oxidation, the change of chloride anion into chlorine atom is an example of oxidation reaction.
