1. The Northern Plains lie to the south of the Himalayas extending 2,500 km in length from East to West.

2. It consists of two river basins-the Indus and the Ganga-Brahmaputra. It is made up of fertile alluvial soil. These support very dense population.

3. The Northern Plains can be divided into four parts:

(a) The Rajasthan Plains

(b) Indus Plain

(c) Ganga Plain

(d) Brahmaputra Plain

4. The Northern Plains are important because :

(а) They are the largest alluvial plains in the world formed by the deposition of silt by the major rivers of the plain.

(б) The rivers are navigable and have water in them throughout the year (Perennial).

\sf\blue{⇝} The rivers after descending from the mountains deposit pebbles in a narrow belt lying parallel to the slopes of shiwaliks. This is known as Bhabar.

\sf\pink{(ii)Terai:-}

\sf\green{⇝} To the south of Bhabar belt, the rivers and stream re-emerge and create a wet, swampy and marshy region known as the Terai. This was thickly forested area but was later on cleared for cultivation.

\sf\red{(iii)Bhangar:-}

\sf\purple{⇝}The largest part of the plane is formed of older alluvium. They lie above the flood Plains of the river and present or terrace- like feature. The soil in this region contains Kanker modules in them. This part is known as Bhangar.

\sf\purple{(iv)Khadar:-}

\sf\pink{⇝}The newer younger deposits of the flood Plains are called Khadar. They are renewed almost every year and are therefore fertile. They are ideal for cultivation.
