The process of taking in a source of energy (food) from outside the body of an organism to inside is known as nutrition. On the basis of nutrition organisms are divided into two types:
Autotrophs- Those organisms which are not dependent on others for food & capable of preparing their own food are known as autotrophs or producers. For example- green plants, they can make their own food through process known as photosynthesis.
Hetrotrohps- Those organisms which are dependent on others for food as they cannot make their food on their own are known as hetrotrophs. For example- animals & humans are dependent on plants for their food.

♠ What is Nutrition?
________
Nutrition is the process of Intake of food , it's digestion , absorption , and distribution to different parts of body. In simpler words The process of acquiring energy and and materials for growth is known as Nutrition.

♠ Classify the organisms on the basis of nutrition
On The Basis of Nutrition , Organisms are classified into two types →
★ Autotrophs
★ Heterotrophs
_____________
♠ What are Autotrophs?
Autotrophs are the organisms , which can manufacture their own food by using simple inorganic materials like Carbon-dioxide and water in the presence of light energy ( Or this process of making food of Autotrophs is known as Photosynthesis). The Autotrophs are also known as the producers. The mode of Nutrition of Autotrophs is known as Autotrophic mode of Nutrition.
Examples of Autotrophs include all green plants on the Earth , and also some microorganisms which are capable of performing Photosynthesis.
_______
♠ What are Heterotrophs?
Heterotrophs are those organisms which depend totally upon other Autotrophs or Heterotrophs for Nutrition. Heterotrophs are also known as Consumers. The Heterotrophs can't synthesise their own food that's why they are dependant on other organisms to derive their nutrition. The mode of Nutrition of Heterotrophs is known as Heterotrophic mode of Nutrition.
Examples of Heterotrophs include all animals on the Earth , fungi and other prokaryotic animals including some non-green flowering plants also.

Autotrophic mode of Nutrition→
The term Autotrophic is derived from two Greek words - 'auto' meaning 'self' and 'trophe' meaning 'nutrition'.
The Autotrophic nutrition can be defined as the means of Nutrition in which organisms synthesise organic materials, I.e. food from inorganic sources. The Autotrophs are self-nourishing.
_____
Heterotrophic mode of Nutrition→
The word Heterotrophic is also derived from two Greek words - 'Hetero' meaning 'different' and 'trophe' meaning 'nutrition' .
The Heterotrophic Nutrition can be defined as the mode of Nutrition in which energy is obtained by intake of food and digestion of organic substances derived from plants and animals. In this , the organic substances after intake are broken down into simpler substances which are utilized in different metabolic activities
________
Heterotrophic Nutrition can be of Three Types→
★ Saprophytic Nutrition
★ Parasitic Nutrition
★ Holozoic Nutrition
______
Saprophytic Nutrition→
The worse Saprophytic is derived from two Greek words - 'sapro' meaning rotten and 'phyto' meaning plants.
The Organisms which get their food from supply of dead and decaying organic matter are known as Saprotrophs. Their mode of Nutrition is Saprophytic. The Saprophytes produce digestive enzymes that break down the food into soluble form which is then absorbed.
Examples of Saprotrophs include Bacteria , Fungi , yeast , mushrooms and moulds etc.
_________
Parasitic Nutrition →
The word Parasitic is derived from Two Greek words - 'para' meaning 'other' and 'site' meaning 'grains'.
Parasite is an organism which lives outside or Inside of the body of an living organism called host and it derives nourishment from the host . The mode of the nutrition by which Parasites get their food is known as Parasitic mode of Nutrition.
Examples of Parasites include Protozoans such as plasmodium , Trypanosoma , Leishmania, and worms like round worms , filarial worms. etc, Fungi like Puccinia and parasites on weak plants.
________
Holozoic Nutrition→
The word Holozoic is derived from two Greek words - 'holos' meaning whole and 'zoic' meaning animal.
Holozoic mode of Nutrition can be defined as the feeding of complex organic matter by ingestion , which is digested and then absorbed .
It's Examples include organisms like , Amoeba , Paramecium , frogs and Human Beings , etc.
________
On the Basis of Food Habits , Holozoic Organisms are further divided into three types →
★ Herbivores
★Carnivores
★Omnivores
______
Herbivores→
The word Herbivores is derived from two Greek words - 'herba' meaning 'herbs' and 'vorate' meaning ' to eat '.
Those animals who feed only on plants and plant products are called as Herbivores.
Examples→ Goat , Buffalo, Cow , Elephant and sheep etc all are Herbivores.
_________
Carnivores→
The word Carnivores is derived from two words - 'carni' meaning 'flesh' and 'vorate' meaning ' to eat ' .
The animals which feed on flesh of other animals are included in this category.
Examples → Lion , Tiger , Leopard etc. are all Examples of Carnivores.
_________
Omnivores →
The word omnivores is derived from two Greek words - 'omnis' meaning 'all' and 'vorate' meaning ' to eat '
Those animals which which feed on both plants and flesh of animals are known as Omnivores.
Examples → Man , Domestic cat , Pig , Crow, cockroach , etc are examples of Omnivores.
