Viruses, fungus, bacteria, protozoa, and worms are the five categories of pathogens.

  • In the right-hand column, you'll find a list of common pathogens in each category.
  • Each pathogen is distinguished by its route of transmission, replicating mechanism, pathogenesis (the process by which it causes disease), and the reaction it evokes.
  • A pathogen infects its host and causes illness.
  • A pathogen is also known as an infectious agent since it causes illnesses.
  • Pathogens, like every other creature, pursue survival and reproduction.
  • The immune system protects the human body against infections.
  • Some viruses are readily combated by the body, but others are potentially lethal.
