There are three chief types of the volcano on the basis of lava - composite, shield, and dome.

Composite Volcanoes

Composite volcanoes, often known as stratovolcanoes, are steep-sided cornets made from sheets of ash and lava outflows. The explosions from these volcanoes may be pyroclastic with the flow of lava.

Shield Volcanoes

Shield volcanoes are deep with lightly slanted sides and are constituted from sheets of lava. Explosions are typically non-explosive.

Dome (Acid Lava Cones)

Lava is much deeper which passes from shield typed volcanoes. Dome volcanoes have considerable sheerer surfaces than shield volcanoes. This is because the basalt is dense and adhesive. It cannot progress very far and before it freezes and solidifies.
